New Year’s Eve is often the best night of the year. From small house parties to epic city-centre extravaganzas, New Year’s is always a night jam-packed with celebration. Choosing the ideal NYE party can be a tricky decision.
Edinburgh brings in the New Year with the traditional. Starting with the spectacular torchlight procession on the 30th, the Scottish events include a huge street party, concert in the gardens and a traditional Ceilidh. There are many good hotels very close to the Hogmanay action in Edinburgh including the Le Monde and the Caledonian Hilton, but good budget options include the Motel One and Ben Doran, both of which are reasonable places to spend the night.
Going a little further afield, why not go stateside and give the iconic New York City a go? Times Square is home to one of the most visual celebrations of New Year’s Eve – but be warned, the square hosts around a million people on the night. With live performances, fireworks and that unmissable ball drop. NYE in Times Square is a once-in-a-lifetime event.
It’d be madness to go all that way and not make a winter trip out of it, and in a city of NYC’s magnitude, there are endless hotels to choose from. Try the Crowne Plaza as it is right on Times Sqaure, or if you fancy something really decadent, consider The Lowell, a beautifully chic boutique hotel on East 63rd Street. There are budget options in the form of Holiday Inns and the Sohotel, a quirky little addition to the NYC hotel scene.
For something incredibly far flung, why not consider Thailand? The Christmas and New Year period is an incredibly fun time to experience the country. Whilst Thailand traditionally celebrates its own New Year – Songkran — in mid-April, western customs are observed in the cities and resorts. If you’re keen to travel around once you get there, be sure to book any flights and accommodation in advance as it’s a very popular time of year for the country.
