A question most of ask ourselves when we are planning a little time off is where can I travel that gives me the best value for money… where can I make my pound stretch the furthest?
With budgets these days being a bit tighter than they used to be, this is a very good question and worth considering before you plan that next vacation to some far-off place.
Exchange rates can often work for you rather than against you. The Pound is reasonably strong, so travelling to countries with a weaker currency is going to work out in your favour. If you take a look at the exchange rates, some countries stand out; for example the Croatian currency is currently trading at about 9.30 Kuna to 1 Pound, and the Danish Krone is about the same. Even the Euro is favourable at about 1.25 Euros to the Pound.
When you look at places like Croatia, Denmark and Hungary, you might be a little surprised at what an excellent vacation opportunity they at present. Croatia is bathed in sunshine even late in the year, and HRS can help you book into some truly fabulous but very inexpensive ocean-front hotels like the Villa Johnny in Podstrana, just south of Split. If you would rather be up in the mountains, then you can check out the highly recommended Mirni Kutak in Otočac.
If heading that far south is not really an option, you can focus on places closer to home. Denmark is a great choice. You can take a ferry over from Harwich to Esbjerg, and from Esbjerg it’s a short drive to places like Legoland. You can travel to Ribe and explore the oldest city in the country, or time your visit to coincide with one of the summer festivals such as the Copenhagen Jazz Festival.
Making your Pound stretch doesn’t have to mean you vacation in your back garden. You can travel abroad, enjoy the experiences of discovering new cultures, stay in fabulous hotels, try out the local food, and do it all on a very affordable budget.
